Mobile Truck Repair in North Charleston, SC

Where the freight actually is

North Charleston is the freight center of gravity for this whole region and it is ten minutes from our base. Two interstates cross here, the container terminals sit inside the city, the rail yard that feeds them is here, and the manufacturing plants that generate the inbound and outbound loads are all within a few miles of each other. If a truck is working in the Lowcountry, odds are good it touches North Charleston at some point in the day.

That density is also why breakdowns here are a different animal than they are out on the corridor. You are rarely far from help – but you are frequently stuck somewhere you absolutely cannot stay: a terminal approach, an active gate lane, the Cosgrove ramps, or the shoulder of I-526 with port traffic stacked behind you. The problem is not distance, it is that the truck has to move now.

We run the whole city, 24 hours, from the Ashley Phosphate interchange to the Leatherman approach, and we will tell you straight on the phone whether what you have is a roadside fix or something that genuinely needs a shop.

Coverage

Where we meet trucks in North Charleston

  • The port terminals – the North Charleston Terminal on Remount Road and the Port Access Road approach to the Leatherman Terminal. Gate lanes, staging rows, chassis problems, flat tires and no-starts on drayage units.
  • I-526 Exit 19 (North Rhett Avenue) – the Pilot Travel Center at 5714 North Rhett is the main truck facility on this side of the river, with a scale and real parking. It is also the standard route to Remount Road and the terminal.
  • I-26 Exits 205 through 217 – Ashley Phosphate at 209A, Aviation and Remount at 211, the I-526 interchange at 212, Montague at 213, Dorchester Road at 215, Cosgrove at 216 and Meeting Street at 217.
  • I-526 across the city – Leeds Avenue, Paramount and Dorchester Road, Montague, International Boulevard, Rivers Avenue and Virginia Avenue, plus the Don N. Holt Bridge over the Cooper River.
  • The Navy Base intermodal yard and the CSX and Norfolk Southern approaches that connect the terminals to the inland ports.
  • The plants and industrial parks – Boeing on International Boulevard, the Bosch site on Dorchester Road, the Cummins turbo operation, and the Palmetto Commerce Park buildings.
  • Rivers Avenue (US-52/78) and Ashley Phosphate Road – the two heaviest local truck arterials in the city, and two of the most crash-prone.
Local Conditions

Two things that put North Charleston trucks on the shoulder

The I-526 drayage backup. When the port is running heavy, I-526 stacks from the I-26 interchange east toward Long Point Road, and a truck with a cooling or air problem can go from “it will make it” to “it will not” while sitting still in that. If your gauges are climbing in a backup, get off at the next exit rather than riding it out – Virginia Avenue, North Rhett and Rivers Avenue all give you somewhere to stop.

The Don N. Holt Bridge. The I-526 span over the Cooper River carries better than 70,000 vehicles a day and it has a dedicated fog warning system for a reason. High wind on that bridge has put tractor-trailers over before. If you are light or empty and the wind is up, that is the wrong place to be, and it is a very bad place to break down. Get across or get off before it.

Either way, call (854) 205-1972 and tell us which interstate, which direction and the nearest exit. In the city we are typically 20 to 40 minutes out once a truck is rolling.

North Charleston FAQs

Mobile truck repair in North Charleston – common questions

Do you provide mobile truck repair at the Charleston port terminals?

We cover the roads and approaches around the North Charleston Terminal on Remount Road and the Port Access Road approach to the Leatherman Terminal, as well as the North Rhett and Remount routes that feed them. Terminal property has its own access and safety rules, so tell us on the phone whether the truck is inside the gate or outside it – that changes how we get to you.

Where is the closest truck stop in North Charleston?

The Pilot Travel Center at 5714 North Rhett Avenue, right off I-526 Exit 19. It has real truck parking and a scale, and it is the practical staging point for anybody working the terminals. If your truck can make it there, it is a much better place to be worked on than a ramp or a gate lane.

How fast can you get to a breakdown in North Charleston?

North Charleston is essentially home turf – about seven miles from our Charleston base. Typical response is 20 to 40 minutes once a truck is rolling, with traffic and time of day being the main variables. Port congestion on I-526 is the thing most likely to stretch it.

My truck died on I-526. What should I do?

Get as far onto the right shoulder as the truck will go, triangles out, and stay on the non-traffic side. Then call with your direction of travel and the nearest exit – Leeds, Dorchester Road, Montague, International, Rivers, North Rhett or Virginia. I-526 shoulders are narrow and the drayage traffic moves fast, so the exit number matters more than the description.

Can you service chassis and drayage equipment?

Yes. Tires, lights and wiring, air lines and glad hands, landing gear and brake problems on container chassis and drayage tractors are routine calls. Give us the position and size for a tire, and tell us where the unit is sitting and whether it is loaded.

Do you do fleet work at the industrial parks and plants?

Yes. Scheduled PM, DOT inspections and breakdown response at yards around Palmetto Commerce Park, International Boulevard, Dorchester Road and the surrounding industrial roads. For fleets we do the inspections on-site so nobody loses a day driving a truck to a lane and waiting.

Which I-26 exit should I give you if I am near Ashley Phosphate Road?

Exit 209A. That interchange is one of the busiest and most crash-prone in the region, so if you are stopped anywhere near it, say so specifically and tell us which side of the interstate you are on. It changes both our route in and where we can safely set up to work.
